408k San Jose Race Recap

Last weekend, we posted our flat runner pic, prayed that the rain would stay away and showed up at the start line of the Represent Running 408k (8k) race in San Jose.

The race start was at the SAP center and the race start had a party vibe with the music rocking and everyone getting their pre-race pictures with a vintage Jimmy and San Jose Sharks themed gear. We jumped in to the Represent Running ambassador start line picture, then easily checked our gear with the line of UPS trucks and made our way to the corrals (where we ran into more Running Lushes!)

There were the usual race announcements but a cool thing happened during the National Anthem — a rainbow appeared and there was a flyby overhead by an incoming Southwest Airline jet. Ok, so, not the Blue Angels, but cool, nonetheless.

The rain held off and we had a nice flat run through cute neighborhoods of San Jose, CA ending at Santana Row. Along the way, we were greeted with nice volunteers at the well-supported water stops as well as the Taji 100 tribe who were honoring our veterans.

Then when we were starting to lose some steam as some of us haven’t been training like we should (cough, cough), we rounded a corner and there was the famous Marachi Mile! Every few feet there was different band playing and cheering us along the way. It was very motivating!

We made it to the finish line at the hip Santana Row area where we picked up our medals and a nice reusable swag bag with snacks. There was a great finish line festival with food trucks, various local businesses and merchandise and a ton of photo op setups. Also, many of the restaurants in Santana Row gave special deals for the race participants. Unfortunately, we had to leave pretty quickly after the race so we didn’t get to watch the kids races nor did do too much at the finish except quick pics with our team. Next time, we will definitely stay to enjoy the experience!

Overall, we give this race a solid A for the following reasons:

  1. It was very well organized with a great, local friendly vibe
  2. Easy, family friendly distance (8k)+ the dog parade at bib pickup and kids races.
  3. Finish Line festival had lots of vendors, photo ops and party!
  4. Free Race pics!
  5. Great swag from Represent Running and Decathlon – a technical shirt, the awesome medal, backpack, and swag bag to hold it all in!

We are looking forward to this race next year and the other races in the Represent Running Series this year to be able to get those bonus medals – Across the Bay 12k and 415k(run across the GG Bridge), Silicon Valley 1/2 Marathon and Food Truck 5k and the East Bay 510K!
